Racializing the concept of ‘housing otherness’: The effects of temporary housing policies on squatters in Rome

This paper explores the long-standing relationship in Rome between socio-cultural diversity and temporary nature of low-income housing solutions. I argue that this phenomenon began long before recent neoliberal trends global post-2008 crisis, instead emerged from gradual development a moral racialized understanding as ‘social award’. has created specific social category known ‘housing otherness’, which includes migrants Italian squatters who are experiencing severe distress. exclusionary approach towards most ‘diverse’ sections population can be traced back to inception public Italy during 1920s.
